The most accessible and respectful way to experience Mount Athos is by joining a cruise along the Athonite coastline. Cruises usually depart from Ouranoupoli and offer views of monasteries, cliffs, forests and the sacred mountain from the sea. It is ideal for families, couples and travelers who cannot enter the peninsula.

Mount Athos is home to 20 Holy Monasteries, along with sketes, cells, hermitages and other monastic dependencies. The monasteries form one of the most important living monastic communities in the Orthodox Christian world. Their architecture, manuscripts, icons and traditions are of exceptional historical value.

Recent published figures mention approximately 158,000 pilgrims in 2024, compared with about 150,000 in 2023. These numbers refer mainly to pilgrims and approved visitors, not ordinary mass tourism. Access remains controlled through permits and daily visitor limits.
